Home Pest Control Tips

  1. Decluttering your home is a good first step in pest prevention. Many types of pests like to hide in infrequently moved boxes, clothes, paper and other household items. This is particularly true of ants, cockroaches and spiders. Don’t make it easy for them – get rid of that old junk and don’t let it pile up again.
  2. Wipe up food spills immediately and don’t leave food or drinks out and uncovered for long periods of time. Human food will attract ants, cockroaches and rodents.
  3. Speaking of the kitchen, keep dry food products in tightly sealed containers high off the floor. Pantry pests can make their way into boxes and loosely closed bags, which will spoil your food and your kitchen.
  4. Seal off cracks, holes and crevices that pests could use as an entry point – even the tiny ones. If mice can squeeze through holes the size of a dime, imagine what ants can do.
  5. Move wood piles and mulch away from the base of your home. Termites hide out in these wood sources then tunnel their way into your foundation wall. Keeping wood and mulch a safe distance from your home will reduce your chances of a termite infestation.
  6. Watch out for hidden sources of moisture. Many pests, including termites and ants, need moisture to survive. So repair leaking faucets, toilet gaskets and hot water heaters quickly, and clean up spilled water immediately to avoid these infestations.
  7. Remove dead or decaying trees from your yard. Nuisance birds, like woodpeckers, are drawn to dead, soft vegetation and will quickly move from pecking trees to pecking on your home.
  8. Check your pets for fleas and ticks often, and treat them with veterinarian-approved spray as needed. Also keep your pet’s sleep and feeding areas clean and dry.
  9. Don’t forget to use caution when traveling. Bed bugs and hobo spiders are known to hitch rides in travelers’ suitcases and clothes, so check your luggage and clothing carefully when you get home.
  10. Get regular inspections from a certified pest control specialist. These experts are trained to detect the hidden signs of pest problems and will treat them quickly to avoid costly damage down the road.
